The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clyde B. Riley (ASN: RA-37234462), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 13 February 1951, the 1st platoon of Company B with a recoilless rifle section and machine gun section attached from Company D, 1st Battalion, proceeded into the village of Suso-ri, Korea. As they moved into the village they came under heavy enemy fire from the west, which pinned them down and inflicted many casualties. Private Riley unhesitatingly left his position of comparative safety, openly dashed to his vehicle, grabbed his machine gun and placed it in action. Immediately he was the target for a deadly stream of enemy fire but he maintained his own accurate fire on the enemy. Shortly thereafter the enemy charged his position from the front and flanks, throwing hand grenades. Despite the intensity of the small arms and mortar fire, he refused to relinquish his position and broke the enemy charge just short of his position. Noticing an enemy machine gun, he placed effective fire on this enemy position and successfully knocked it out. Once again the enemy charged Private Riley’s position and again he gallantly poured devastating fire into enemy ranks. In this action he was seriously wounded by grenade fragments but did not leave his gun until so ordered by his squad leader. When this attack was repulsed, fifty to sixty enemy dead were found in front of his position. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Private Riley reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
