The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) James D. Rifleman (ASN: 0-1844700), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 21 November 1950, the First Battalion was in a defensive perimeter at Majon-ni, Korea. A sector of the perimeter held by a composite force from headquarters company was savagely attacked by the enemy. Due to overwhelming odds, the enemy penetrated the defensive position and took over a sector of the line. Captain Rifleman, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, and fully cognizant of the situation, exposed himself continuously to enemy fire in reorganizing his men. Fearlessly he then led his men in an assault upon the overrun positions and restored that sector of the line. Captain Rifleman, heedless of the intense enemy fire, moved along the line encouraging and inspiring his men. As a result of his heroic actions, the enemy assault was repelled and the penetrated sector restored. The courage, leadership, and gallantry displayed by Captain Rifleman on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
