Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 768 (November 26, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Raymond W. Riddle (ASN: 0-979672), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 October 1951 in the vicinity of Samtae-dong, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Riddle was attached to Company E which was assaulting a strongly fortified enemy-held hill. From the company’s observation post, he noticed that the leading elements of the attack were pinned down by intense enemy fire. Realizing the seriousness of this situation, Lieutenant Riddle left his position of comparative safety and advanced over the fire-swept area to the friendly unit. At this point, he directed the men to continue in their attack, and, shouting words of encouragement, led the way. By his courageous example the friendly elements succeeded in overrunning the hostile forces from their positions, inflicting numerous casualties upon them. The aggressive leadership and gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Riddle on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
