Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 683 (November 5, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Gilbert P. Riddick (ASN: RA-13357756), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 October 1951 in the vicinity of Sadanggol, Korea. On this date Company G was attacking well-entrenched enemy emplacements. As the unit advanced, heavy enemy fire from commanding positions inflicted several casualties upon friendly troops, including the platoon sergeant of the lead force. Private Riddick, with complete disregard for his own safety, left his machine gun squad, which was providing supporting fire, and joined the leading elements in the attack. Disregarding the intense hostile fire, Private Riddick skillfully deployed his men into effective positions and directed their fire upon hostile forces. Through his aggressiveness and leadership ability, friendly units were able to accomplish their mission successfully with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action displayed by Private Riddick on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
