The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Marlin E. Richart (ASN: RA-13316036), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 31 January 1951, near Kumyangjang-ni, Korea, the 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, had the mission of securing Hill 425. Company F, 2d Battalion, which was advancing under intense enemy automatic weapons and artillery fire, was suffering heavy casualties. Private Richart was proceeding to the aid of a fallen comrade when a counterattacking enemy swept down the hillside in an effort to push Company F off the hill. Private Richart seeing the onrushing foe dropped to the ground beside his fallen comrade and pretended to be dead. He remained in this prone position until several of the enemy had passed him, then with no thought of his own personal safety, jumped to his feet and commenced firing at the back of the enemy counterattacking force. This fire from the rear completely demoralized the enemy and resulted in repelling the attack. The outstanding courage and display of initiative on the part of Private Richart reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
