The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Troy C. Carroll (ASN: 1572832), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 301st Tank Battalion, Tank Corps, American Expeditionary Forces, near Brancourt, France, 8 October 1918. Corporal Carroll was a gunner in a tank which was struck four times by shells, which killed or wounded the entire crew. Disregarding his own wounds in the back and leg, he walked 3 miles to secure assistance, guided stretcher bearers back to the disabled tank and assisted in evacuating the wounded until he was completely exhausted.
