The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Beverly T. Richardson (ASN: 0-32864), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 3d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 8 April 1951, near Yong-some-gi, Korea. On that date his battalion was attacking a well dug-in enemy force in heavily fortified positions. In order to keep the attack going against the heavy enemy fire, Colonel Richardson moved to the forward positions of his leading rifle company and directed the deployment of the men. Members of the unit were reassured by this display of courage and doubled their efforts to drive the enemy from the positions. Despite renewed efforts, the attack seemed destined for failure until he voluntarily reconnoitered positions approximately two miles to the rear of the enemy defense line, for the use of his tanks and antiaircraft artillery in ground support. He then personally directed the armor and artillery to the positions and directed their fire against the enemy. So successful was this flanking action that the enemy was forced to withdraw along his entire defense line with a great toll of casualties. The gallantry and inspirational leadership displayed by Colonel Richardson reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
