The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward W. Rhodes (ASN: 0-1335840), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 May 1951, near Song-bong-dong, Korea, while occupying defensive positions, Lieutenant Rhodes’ platoon was attacked by a strong enemy force and subjected to heavy mortar and small arms fire. Completely ignoring the fusillade of bullets sweeping the area, Lieutenant Rhodes helped evacuate several wounded infantrymen to a more covered position. Realizing that the ammunition supply was nearly exhausted, he again braved enemy fire to redistribute ammunition among his men. Although the enemy repeatedly assaulted the friendly positions, Lieutenant Rhodes, encouraging his men to close with the enemy in hand-to-hand combat, successfully held the position. Lieutenant Rhodes’ gallant actions, courageous leadership, and selfless devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
