The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Corporal] James W. Rhea (ASN: RA-25704107), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 October 1951 in the vicinity of Nae-dong, Korea. On this date Sergeant Rhea, a member of a demolition squad, was attached to Company F which had the mission of securing vital enemy-held positions. As elements of the unit crossed the open terrain, they were subjected to intense hostile mortar fire which inflicted many friendly casualties. Sergeant Rhea, realizing the seriousness of the situation and with complete disregard for his personal safety, braved the enemy fire to assist the wounded and evacuate them to safety. He skillfully administered first aid and constructed litters with which to dispatch his wounded comrades to the aid station. His immediate and fearless actions undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades and were an inspiration to all who observed him. The gallantry in action and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Rhea reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
