Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 1159 (July 31, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Theodore Thomas Reynolds, Jr. (ASN: 0-1794990), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 5 and 6 March 1944. First Lieutenant Reynolds volunteered to arm a mine field known to contain dangerously defective mines. Aware that two comrades had already been injured at the task, he worked diligently over the two-day period at great personal risk and successfully armed a total of fifty mines. The fifty-first exploded, wounding him mortally. This officer’s exemplary bravery in accomplishing a vital operation at the sacrifice of his life was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
