The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John Reskovac, Jr. (ASN: RA-33261842), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Kiwaji-mal, Korea. On that date Company M was supporting the rifle companies of the battalion against a heavy enemy attack by a large number of enemy. One group of the enemy had infiltrated the right flank of the battalion and were in the process of setting up an observation post in the rear of the 81-mm. mortar platoon position. They had already emplaced three machine guns and were delivering heavy fire into the platoon position. Private Reskovac, a gunner on one of the mortars, realized that superior fire power must be brought to bear on the enemy weapons lest the whole platoon be annihilated. Disregarding his own safety completely, he proceeded to set up one of the mortars to fire in the direction of the enemy positions. Despite the intensity of the enemy fire, he worked swiftly end was soon delivering effective fire into the enemy. His fire destroyed one gun and silenced the others until rifle troops were able to move up, flank the positions and destroy them. The determined and gallant action of Private Reskovac reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
