The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Paul A. Remagen (ASN: RA-18332110), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, an infantry company was withdrawing, under the pressure of a strong enemy attack, from Hill 289, near Tonginang-ni, Korea. Corporal Remagen had been ordered to lay down a protective machine gun barrage to cover the withdrawal and in doing so eliminated one hostile automatic weapon and its crew. In the course of the engagement, a mortar shell exploded close to Corporal Remagen’s gun, putting it temporarily out of action. Boldly disregarding the enemy fire, he calmly made the necessary repairs to the weapon and continuing to return the hostile barrage, he succeeded in repelling the enemy with many casualties. Corporal Remagen’s gallantry and steadfast courage reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
