Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 193 (June 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Eugene J. Reinhardt (ASN: 0-2019790), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 3 March 1951, near Hoengsong, Korea. On that date his company was assigned the mission of occupying and holding key ground east of Hoengsong. At about 0315 hours, aggressive enemy patrols supported by automatic weapons fire began probing the positions of the unit. These patrols succeeded in closing in on the platoon commanded by Lieutenant Reinhardt, and were attempting to drive the friendly units from their dug-in positions. At this time, against great odds, he left his position of relative safety to contact every member of his platoon to give instructions. He moved about from position to position, although enemy bullets and shell fragments hit within inches of him, on two occasions perforating his clothing, and re-supplied each man with grenades and ammunition. The gallant and heroic leadership of Lieutenant Reinhardt was responsible in thwarting four separate enemy attacks over a period of three hours. The gallantry of Lieutenant Reinhardt reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
