During the conflict, accompanied by an aid man, he proceeded along the trench line toward the rear slope of the outpost where they encountered two enemy soldiers. The two men then continued down the trench, delivering covering fire for each other, upon finding two wounded friendly soldiers, carried them to the safety of a nearby bunker. As a result of the heroism displayed by Lieutenant Reiknemeyer the friendly elements were able to repulse the hostile assault.
