Headquarters, FIRST U.S. Army, General Orders No. 26 (February 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Walter T. Reid (ASN: 34382755), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 509th Military Police Battalion, on 27 November 1944, in Belgium. When an enemy bomb struck a house and trapped a number of civilians in the basement, Private First Class Reid assisted in extricating a severely wounded man buried beneath the debris. Although a heavy brick wall threatened to collapse upon the rescuers, Private First Class Reid, at great personal risk, continued his efforts and aided in clearing an opening to the basement through which seven persons were removed. By his heroic actions, Private First Class Reid assisted in saving the lives of eight persons, thus setting an example worthy of emulation.
