The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Marion M. Reid (ASN: 0-1017388), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 December 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On that date, the Division was being engaged by a numerically superior enemy force, five Chinese Divisions were being hurled at the Division. The 2d Division was trying to find a route of withdrawal, when the situation grew worse. There were many wounded needing immediate treatment, ammunition was low, supplies scarce, and the units were suffering such heavy casualties that their effectiveness decreased with every hour. Captain Reid, voluntarily exposed himself to intense hostile fire on many occasions while he himself delivered automatic fire upon the enemy. He proceeded on foot over a lengthy portion of the withdrawal route under enemy small arms and mortar fire, to assist in the movement of damaged vehicles from the road and to assist in the removal of wounded so that the withdrawal of the main column over the road could be effected. Night and darkness brought the Chinese close-in with bayonets, small-arms and hand grenades. Hand to hand fighting broke out all along the road. Captain Reid’s courageous example and leadership contributed greatly to the safe movement of both personnel and vehicles. The services performed by Captain Reid is in accordance with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
