The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Darrell K. Reeter (ASN: RA-17279321), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 24 March 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, enemy mortar fire had pinned down the advance elements of Company C on Hill 337. Private Reeter, who was in a ditch guarding a recoilless rifle, realized that the hostile mortar position had to be destroyed to neutralize its pressure on the attacking unit. With the aid of field glasses, he searched the terrain and locating the position, took careful aim and fired on the enemy mortar, but the well-entrenched position deflected the full force of the round, allowing the mortar to continue firing. Private Reeter, seeing this, reloaded the recoilless rifle and carrying the cumbersome piece to an open position offering a better field of fire, he calmly made the necessary adjustments and fired, scoring a direct hit which eliminated the hostile position. His calculations and accurate firing of the piece were accomplished as the enemy shot directly at him attempting to remove the existing danger of the recoilless rifle. This soldier’s fearless act destroyed the major obstacle in the path of his company’s attack and permitted it to continue its advance, securing its objective. Private Reeter’s calm gallantry and unwavering courage reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
