Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 10 (January 16, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Jim O. Reed (ASN: RA-38778964), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 November 1950, near Tongyang, Korea, Corporal Reed’s Company, in convoy, was ambushed by well dug-in enemy forces of superior numbers and pinned down by their fire. Corporal Reed, disregarding his personal safety, voluntarily proceeded across open terrain, constantly under enemy fire and observation, to a vantage point where he placed effective automatic rifle fire on the enemy, allowing the company to continue its advance with a minimum of casualties. After rejoining his company and learning that a truck containing six wounded soldiers remained in the ambush area, Corporal Reed voluntarily returned to the area, under heavy enemy fire, and drove the vehicle and its wounded occupants to safety. Corporal Reed’s outstanding heroism, above and beyond the call of duty, is in keeping with highest military traditions.
