The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Frank Willard Carner (ASN: 2110693), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, south of Sedan, France, 7 November 1918. Although wounded, Corporal Carner refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his squad forward. Finding another squad without a leader, he combined it with his own, led them both to the attack under heavy fire, and succeeded in driving the enemy from a strong position. His action enabled his company to advance to its objective.
