Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. General Orders No. 849 (December 12, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Michael Joseph Redmond (ASN: RA-12065644), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 October 1951 in the vicinity of Sanggonbae, Korea. On this date Company E launched an assault on a dominating hill held by a fanatically determined enemy defending it with a heavy concentration of fire. Corporal Redmond, a squad leader, was leading his men on to the objective when they were pinned down by the intense hostile fire. Completely disregarding his personal safety and the enemy fire, Corporal Redmond fully exposed himself and, calling to his men to follow him, advanced toward the hostile positions. Inspired by the heroic example his men joined him in the assault. While leading his men with utter indifference to the enemy fire, Corporal Redmond was fatally wounded. His dauntless courage and outstanding leadership gave his men the incentive to continue the assault and secure their objective. The gallantry in action and self-sacrificing devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Redmond on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
