Headquarters, EIGHTH U.S. Army, Korea, General Orders No. 258 (May 2, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Robert L. Ray, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy near Ultun, Korea. On 12 February 1951, he was occupying a forward position defending the right flank of his platoon when the enemy launched a strong attack. Refusing to withdraw, Private Ray delivered devastating fire on the leading elements of the hostile force, inflicting heavy casualties. As the attack continued, small enemy groups made several attempts to rush his position but were driven back each time by his rapid accurate fire. Enemy fire on his position became increasingly heavy, and Private Ray was hit and seriously wounded; but despite the pain from his wound, he remained in position and continued to place withering fire on the hostile troops until the attack subsided. The gallant and intrepid actions of Private Ray prevented the enemy from overrunning the right flank of his platoon and reflect utmost credit on himself and the military service.
