The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Loyd C. Ray (ASN: RA-34988043), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Imok-Chong, Korea. During the night of that date, Sergeant Ray was on guard in the command post area of Company L. Spotting several moving objects in the darkness he unhesitatingly challenged them. Receiving an answer of grenades and small arms fire, Sergeant Ray left the safety of his foxhole and advanced into the deadly enemy fire. Completely disregarding his personal safety, he engaged the enemy throwing grenades and firing his rifle. He succeeded in killing the hostile soldiers but in the course of this action, he was seriously wounded by an enemy grenade which later proved fatal. His heroic and selfless actions disrupted the enemy’s attempt to overrun the command post area, saving the lives of many of his comrades. The gallantry in action and self-sacrificing spirit displayed by Sergeant Ray reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
