Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 822 (December 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James B. Ray (ASN: US-51080355), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 1 October 1951 in the vicinity of Satae-ri, Korea. On that date Private Ray was maintaining an observation post in an effort to observe the movements of a hostile force. Not satisfied with the observation from his present position, he advanced to a site well isolated from the friendly elements. Though under constant hostile artillery and small arms fire, he ably manned his emplacement, relaying vital information concerning enemy strength and position to his unit. In the course of this act he was ordered to return to his original position and while doing so was wounded by hostile fire. As a result of his voluntary act accurate information regarding the enemy was obtained. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Ray on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
