The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Lyle H. Raun (ASN: 0-2208345), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery C, 38th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mungeelungni, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Raun was serving in the capacity of an artillery forward observer for a friendly unit during its assault on heavily fortified enemy positions. On numerous occasions he exposed himself to the intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire so as to effectively observe and direct artillery fire upon the enemy. At times he advanced with the forward elements of the assaulting unit to secure an advantageous position. During the engagement he was painfully wounded by the enemy fire, but refused evacuation and continued in the assault until friendly units had successfully secured their objective. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Raun on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
