The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John H. Ramsburg (ASN: 0-2018758), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 7 January 1951 in the vicinity of Wonju, Korea. The battalion command post was surrounded and attacked by an estimated two companies of the enemy. Captain Ramsburg immediately ran outside the building and organized a defensive line in front of the command post. During the two and one half hour firefight which ensued, he constantly moved through grenade, automatic weapons and small arms fire coming into the area from point blank range. When the enemy attempted to force his way through a gate into the courtyard of the command post, he organized a crew to man a machine gun mounted on a jeep. With this weapon, he was able to hold off the enemy at the gate. When the crew members were wounded by an exploding grenade, he fired the machine gun alone until another crew could be organized. Although he had been wounded by grenade fragments, he remained in the courtyard, fighting courageously and aggressively until the enemy was repelled. The gallantry displayed by Captain Ramsburg reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
