The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Luis Manuel De Jesus Ramos-Cruz (ASN: US-50102564), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 8 June 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, during C Company’s assault on Hill 687, Private Ramos-Cruz, lead scout for the Second Squad of the Second Platoon, had advanced with his unit to within 60 yards of the objective when the enemy suddenly opened fire with small arms, automatic weapons, and mortars. Although seriously wounded in the initial burst of fire, Private Ramos-Cruz gallantly rose to a standing position and, in full view of the enemy, courageously moved forward against them firing his rifle. He had progressed approximately 30 yards and fired three clips of ammunition when again hit by the hail of hostile fire. Exhorted by his comrades to cease his attack and submit to medical treatment, he had withdrawn to a less exposed position and was receiving medical aid when mortally wounded by fragments from a bursting enemy hand grenade. The superb gallantry and determined aggressiveness displayed by Private Ramos-Cruz demoralized the enemy enabling his unit to secure the objective and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
