Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 67 (August 18, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Manuel R. Ramirez (ASN: 38159864), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy, while serving with Company **, *** Engineer Battalion, 9th Infantry Division. On ** May 1943, near **** **** in the vicinity of ********, Tunisia, Private Ramirez was wounded along with sixteen other soldiers, some fatally, when hit by an enemy anti-personnel mine. Despite his injury and not knowing whether there were more mines in the area, Private Ramirez swept a path from the scene of the explosion to the road with a mine detector which he knew was not in working condition in order to instill confidence in an ambulance crew so they would not hesitate to come in and remove the wounded. Private Ramirez’s actions were in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Military Service.
