The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Stuart Carkener, II, (ASN: 656044), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 76th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Roncheres, France, 30 July 1918. Despite the fierce shelling to which he was subjected, Corporal Carkener remained at his forward observation post for many hours, until killed by enemy shell fire.
