Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 365 (August 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Richard A. Raleigh (ASN: ER-36847690), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 June 1951, shortly after Company C had secured Hill 717 near Segok, Korea, the enemy initiated a savage counterattack. Sergeant Raleigh, constantly exposing himself to the intense mortar and machine gun fire, carried ammunition to the men whose supply was exhausted and also removed several wounded soldiers from their foxholes to a safe location. As the fanatical attack continued, a sector of the perimeter was driven back approximately 40 yards. Quickly rallying the men, Sergeant Raleigh led them in a charge, inflicting many casualties on the enemy force and terminating with the restoration of the former defensive perimeter. Later, when wounded by an exploding enemy grenade, he refused medical attention and remained in his position, aiding his comrades in repulsing the foe. The outstanding gallantry, initiative, and courage exhibited by Sergeant Raleigh reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
