Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 33 (January 21, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Edward B. Rakowiecki (ASN: US-52074479), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 October 1951 in the vicinity of Chong-ni, Korea. On this date Sergeant Rakowiecki, leading a machine gun squad, was advancing up a strategic and heavily fortified enemy held hill when he came under intense enemy fire. During the ensuing action his squad suffered heavy casualties and the machine gun was destroyed by the hostile fire. Undaunted, Sergeant Rakowiecki secured an automatic rifle, and, completely exposing himself to the enemy fire, ascended the hill. Ignoring the intense fire directed at him, he continued to advance, storming and destroying several enemy bunkers until he reached the objective. His heroic and selfless actions resulted in the successful completion of the mission and many enemy casualties. The gallantry in action and outstanding leadership displayed by Sergeant Rakowiecki on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
