The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George A. Rainville (SN: A-29576), Canadian Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Second Company, Second Regiment, First Special Service Force, in action against the enemy near Borgo Piave, Italy, on 1 May 1944. Sergeant Rainville was in command of a light machine gun squad which was part of a force sent out to determine enemy strength when a bitter fire fight developed. Enemy small arms fire, mortar fire, and artillery concentration were intense, as a result of which casualties were numerous. A member of Sergeant Rainville’s crew was seriously wounded and abandoned when the enemy forced his crew to take a new position. Having determined the disposition of the enemy, a withdrawal was ordered. Unmindful of his own safety, Sergeant Rainville left the comparative security of a shallow ditch, crossed fifty yards of flat fire-swept ground, picked up his helpless comrade and returned, then carried him for 800 yards over exposed terrain to a place of safety. The daring act and high regard of his fellow soldier’s welfare reflect great credit upon Sergeant Rainville and the Armed Forces of the Allied Nations.
