The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Marion Herman Cardwell, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 58th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chevillon, France, 18 July 1918. After his company had failed in an attack on Hill 208 with the loss of two officers and sixty-five men, Lieutenant Cardwell reorganized the remaining men of his organization and personally led them in a second attack on the same objective. The advance was made in the face of heavy machine-gun and trench mortar fire, but due to the example and individual bravery of Lieutenant Cardwell, the objective was taken and held.
