Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 293 (July 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class James G. Quinnett, Jr. (ASN: ER-37475160), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 22 – 23 May 1951, in the vicinity of Songbong-dong, Korea, the Second Platoon of Company G had the mission of holding the right flank of the company sector. When the enemy initiated a fierce attack against the platoon’s positions, several friendly casualties were sustained. Sergeant Quinnett voluntarily moved through intense small arms and mortar fire to assist in the evacuation of his stricken comrades. On three occasions, he led a bayonet counterattack and restored the platoon’s positions and, when the ammunition supply became critically low, he redistributed the ammunition from one position to another. Sergeant Quinnett’s outstanding gallantry, fearless leadership and exemplary devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
