The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Cyril Carder, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Soissons, France, 21 July 1918. Having been wounded in the back and arm, Lieutenant Carder refused to be evacuated, but continued to lead his platoon forward in the face of intense machine-gun fire, repeatedly exposing himself, with total disregard for personal safety, until he was killed by machine-gun fire.
