The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Frederick Quick, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, from 18 July to 5 August 1943. During this period Private Quick repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire in the zealous performance of his duties as a linesman. On 22 July, while with a wire checking party, he was ambushed by an enemy light machine gun detachment. Crawling behind his truck where he was in defilade he observed an officer lying in the open road caught in the cross-fire of two machine guns. Private Quick left the security of the truck, crawled to the officer under fire, and dragged him to partial coverage. He then assisted in carrying the officer some 400 yards over hazardous terrain to a first aid station for treatment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
