The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph T. Pulliam (ASN: 0-960654), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, Company F, 2d Battalion, in the assault on Hill 400, was subjected to a heavy volume of enemy small arms, automatic weapons, mortar, and artillery fire, inflicting many casualties among the unit. Observing that the company commander had been wounded, Lieutenant Pulliam, although wounded himself, refused evacuation in order to lead the entire right element of the company in the assault. Fearlessly exposing himself to the lethal barrage, he inspired his men to follow him in a charge which terminated with the seizure of the objective. Lieutenant Pulliam’s gallant leadership and courageous initiative reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
