Headquarters, EIGHTH U.S. Army, Korea, General Orders No. 46 (January 29, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Noel S. Proulx, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy near Nanchon-jon, Korea, on 15 October 1950. As a combined tank-infantry attack was moving forward to knock out a roadblock, it was suddenly brought under heavy machine gun and small arms fire by an entrenched and concealed enemy. Leaping from the lead tank, Private Proulx, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, charged up a small hill toward the enemy positions. Ignoring the hail of enemy fire that was directed at him, Private Proulx moved to within a few feet of an enemy machine gun and destroyed it with a hand grenade. Then turning to a second gun and advancing directly through its devastating fire, he threw other grenades which were effective in not only destroying a second machine gun but a self propelled artillery piece, as well. By his extreme courage and aggressive action, Private Proulx, in his single-handed assault, not only caused the destruction of several enemy crew-served weapons, but he so demoralized the remainder of the enemy force that they either fled in panic or surrendered. The gallantry of Private Proulx reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
