The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Alvin J. Pringle (ASN: RA-36456613), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 24 April 1951, Private Pringle was attached to the mortar section of H Company, occupying defensive positions near Taejon-ni, Korea, when the enemy forcefully attacked the unit’s perimeter. During the engagement, Private Pringle voluntarily left his position of cover to go to the aid of a wounded man in an adjacent location. En route he was struck by shrapnel from an exploding grenade, but unheeding the wound, continued on. After he had rendered the necessary first aid, Private Pringle realized that the charging enemy troops had overrun and surrounded the area. Picking up the wounded man’s rifle, he opened fire and with his lethal accurate volleys killed 15 enemy soldiers and scattered the remainder, thus clearing the sector for movement. He then lifted his stricken comrade and evacuated him to a place of relative safety. Returning to the mortar position, he assisted the squad to carry the weapons and ammunition to awaiting vehicles which removed them from the battle site and reorganizing the men of the section, he conducted them to positions of safety. Private Pringle’s aggressive leadership and gallant disregard for his personal well-being reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
