The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Larry J. Gaynor (ASN: 33105505), United States Army, for gallantry in action at Tokashiki Shima, Karema Retto, on 24 June 1945. As a member of an assault platoon assigned to protect the right flank of the main body, Private First Class Gaynor on his own initiative assumed command of his squad when the squad leader was called to the rear by the platoon commander. Through his gallant efforts, and brilliant leadership, the squad was able to hold the ground gained, but in so doing, Private First Class Gaynor was mortally wounded. His display of initiative and leadership is worthy of the highest praise, and in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
