Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 76 (March 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Glenn W. Prettyman (ASN: ER-55009255), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 28 Ð 29 November 1950, in the vicinity of Sackang-ni, Korea, Private Prettyman was in a dug-in position near the company command post when a strong enemy force infiltrated the company perimeter and threatened the command post itself. The area was being subjected to sporadic artillery fire and mortar rounds in addition to heavy automatic weapons and small arms fire. Displaying complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Prettyman voluntarily left his defensive position and posted himself at the entrance to the command post and remained in this position for several hours exposed to heavy fire. He repulsed several attacks. He killed one of the enemy bearing a pole charge within five yards of his position. Private Prettyman, through his bravery, prevented disruption of the company operations, killed five of the enemy, and wounded several others. Private Prettyman’s display of gallantry in the face of the enemy reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
