The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Irving A. Press (ASN: RA-12327009), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 12 October 1951 in the vicinity of Imok-Chong, North Korea. On that date Private Press’ Platoon was furnishing direct fire support to a Rifle Company in the attack against the enemy. When his Platoon had exhausted its ammunition supply and was under intense enemy artillery and mortar fire, Private Press, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, voluntarily undertook the task of re-supplying the Platoon. Fully exposed to the hostile fire, he left his position and returned bearing a tremendous load of ammunition. Although wounded in the initial trip, he refused evacuation and again braved the heavy fire to secure more projectiles. On this second trip, while returning to his position, he was fatally wounded. His extreme bravery inspired his comrades and enabled the Platoon to continue its support mission, inflict many casualties upon the enemy and materially affect the ultimate success of overrunning the enemy’s positions. The gallantry in action exhibited by Private Press on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
