The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Daniel Chapman Prescott (0-27837), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a Pilot with Headquarters Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 9 December 1950, when the 1st Marine Division was surrounded and isolated by a numerically superior enemy force in the vicinity of Kotori, Korea, Captain Prescott unhesitatingly volunteered to aid in the evacuation of the wounded. Piloting a liaison type aircraft, he flew two missions over mountainous terrain and landed on an extremely short airstrip which was constantly subjected to intense enemy fire. As a result of his exemplary bravery, two seriously wounded infantrymen were evacuated to safety where they received adequate medical attention. Captain Prescott’s gallantry and aggressiveness reflects great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
