The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Vincent D. Prebis (ASN: RA-12111650), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Anju, Korea, on 5 November 1950. Private Prebis’ squad, maintaining contact between companies, was attacked by an enemy force estimated at well over platoon strength and forced to withdraw. As the squad moved to higher ground Private Prebis unhesitatingly moved to an exposed position where he covered, by automatic rifle fire, the withdrawal. With utter disregard for his own safety he remained in his far forward position and although severely wounded withdrew only when assured that his comrades had safely retired to the rear. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Prebis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
