The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Sherman Walter Pratt (ASN: 0-2006846), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 29 and 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. On the night of 29 and 30 November 1950, he was assigned the mission of holding commanding terrain to cover the withdrawal of elements of the division. In the early morning hours of 30 November 1950 his defensive position was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force, which inflicted many casualties among his men. By skillfully shifting his men from one point to another as the attacks occurred, Captain Pratt was able to meet and repel each assault upon his positions. With complete disregard for his own safety he constantly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire and personally directed all phases of the defense. By his forceful and inspiring leadership he was able to hold his remaining men together and successfully defend the position. The gallantry and competent leadership displayed by Captain Pratt on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
