The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) John A. Carey (ASN: 0-430781), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane with the 5th Fighter Squadron, Northwest African Strategic Air Force, in aerial operations in the North Africa Theater of Operations, on 8 May 1943. With his engine badly damaged by anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Carey was forced to crash land behind enemy lines. Through great resourcefulness and ingenuity he ha made his way to within sight of friendly territory when he encountered a patrol of six Italians and one German. The enemy gave chase and subsequently opened fire. Lieutenant Carey outdistanced his pursuers and after 500 yards came upon a British gun carrier with a crew of three. He and the British crew then turned about and captured the entire enemy patrol. The courage and resourcefulness displayed by First Lieutenant Carey were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
