The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Floyd W. Porter (ASN: RA-19015831), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 19 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On this date his company was attacking high ground against the opposition of well-entrenched enemy forces. During the attack, the enemy subjected the company to such intense fire from all types of weapons that its advance was halted and the success of its mission was seriously jeopardized. The platoon commanded by Sergeant Porter suffered heavy casualties and had become disorganized. Displaying complete indifference for his personal safety, he exposed himself to the withering hostile fire and reorganized the platoon. Inspiring his men by his own fearless action he led them in a charge against the enemy positions. During this final assault he single-handedly engaged and destroyed an enemy machine gun and its crew. As a result of his heroic leadership, his platoon succeeded in overrunning the enemy positions and securing its objective with a minimum of casualties. The gallantry and inspirational leadership displayed on this occasion by Sergeant Porter reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
