Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 334 (September 24, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Ewell G. Pope, Jr. (ASN: 0-2205667), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 11 to 12 August 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. At that time Lieutenant Pope was leading a combat patrol consisting of the members of the 1st Platoon of Company G. As the patrol neared its objective, they were suddenly ambushed by a numerically superior enemy force. In the ensuing fire fight, Lieutenant Pope was wounded by a hand grenade, but refused evacuation, choosing to remain with his men. On several occasions during the fire fight, Lieutenant Pope exposed himself, purposely drawing fire to enable his patrol to engage enemy targets. He was then hit a second time, but disregarding the intense pain and profuse bleeding from his wounds, he continued to lead and direct the actions of his patrol until they reached the safety of friendly lines. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Pope reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
