The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Georghias Polychroni, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on the night of 17 – 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Pungchon-ni, Korea. On that date, Private First Class Polychroni was in a defensive position on the right flank of his company. The company was subject to a night attack by hordes of fanatical enemy soldiers, supported by artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire. Throughout the night-long attack Private Polychroni with fearless determination fought the enemy, using his rifle, hand grenades and 60-mm. mortar shells fired from a grenade adapter. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he several times left his covered position in order to deliver fire on the enemy, shooting both to the front and rear and killing many enemy around the adjacent bunkers of his comrades. This fearless courage and tenacious stand were responsible for halting the enemy and inflicting heavy casualties upon him. The gallantry demonstrated by Private Polychroni reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
