The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Milos S. Polovina (ASN: ER-57504196), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 23 April 1951, near Popsu-dong, Korea, as the Third Platoon was attacking the entrenched enemy on Hill 164, it was suddenly subjected to and pinned down by a withering hail of enemy fire. Corporal Polovina, an automatic rifleman with this unit, realizing the seriousness of the situation, voluntarily leaped to his feet and raced through the seemingly unpenetrable rain of fire to a position on the enemy’s right flank and poured intense fire into the hostile emplacements. As the enemy soldiers were forced to shift their fire to him, the platoon quickly seized the opportunity and, moving to the left flank, began to assault the enemy positions. Observing this, Corporal Polovina advanced upon the enemy firing his weapon. Caught in the crossfire, the confused hostile troops were quickly driven from the hill while sustaining heavy casualties. The superb gallantry and outstanding initiative exhibited by Corporal Polovina reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
