The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Arthur Callard (ASN: 49465), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Etienne-a-Arnes, France, 3 October 1918. While on duty as a company runner Private Callard carried a message through two barrages to regimental commanders. By his act many casualties were avoided.
